“The ordinances of the LORD
are true, all of them just… They are more precious than gold”
Ps 19:10-11
In today’s world,
there seems to be a revolution against God’s commandments. Many seem to have
forgotten that His commandments are for our good, and obedience to them brings
blessings. Instead, they are seen as restrictive, bothersome, and arbitrary. In
an age when many insist on disregarding the very laws of nature, with some even
choosing to rebel against their God-given male or female nature, the
commandments of God are broken in ways few could have foreseen even a few years
ago. These new ways of disobedience are connected to another cultural trend:
the revival of old sins. Many young people are being deceived anew by the
inviting portrayal of capricious gods and goddesses with supernatural powers
that fill our television screens and computer games. Filmmakers and fiction
writers have rewritten 2000 years of history, ignoring the Christian adventure
and denying the Christian contribution while substituting a tantalizing world
of good and evil witches and wizards, fairies and sprites, magical powers and
incantations.
Where are the
ardent saints and creative storytellers that are on fire to invite young people
to the great adventure of following Christ? Where is the “zeal for God’s house”
that consumed Jesus at the sight of the moneychangers in the marketplace? Let
us as His followers overturn the tables of popular culture and reclaim the
imagination of this generation, lighting a fire in the hearts of the young so
that they will once again desire to find God’s intent for their lives.
Many of us are
intimidated by the accusations that we are unkind when we speak the truth about
such things as chastity, holiness, and respect for God. But the truth is
attractive and to proclaim it is merciful. When Christians show obedience and
faithfulness to God’s commandments in every facet of life, we bring blessing on
the generations to come. Be courageous and speak the truth even when it’s
unpopular, so that all generations will come to know the blessing and the
beauty of following Jesus Christ.
“To fall in love with God is
the greatest romance;
to seek him the greatest adventure;
to find him, the
greatest human achievement.”
~ St. Augustine
