“Jesus said… "Peace
be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." …He breathed on
them and said… "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are
forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."
What a beautiful
reading for Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus, who suffered and died to win
forgiveness for our sins, gives His Apostles – the bishops and priests chosen
to lead His Church - the authority to forgive sin. With the Holy Spirit to
guide them, He sends them out to bring His Divine Mercy to the world.
Yet many
Christians reject the authority of the Church to forgive sin, refusing to
consider confessing their sins to a priest.
Even Catholics often fail to take advantage of this precious gift,
neglecting the Sacrament of Reconciliation. But if we truly understood the
gifts the Lord desires to pour out on the world through this Sacrament, the
lines at the confessional would stretch out the door of every Catholic Church
every Saturday afternoon. Jesus’s heart must break when we reject the healing graces He longs to give us. In order to once again call us back to Him, Jesus gave St. Faustina a series of messages concerning His Divine Mercy. Jesus asked Faustina to have an image painted, showing rays of blood and water flowing from His pierced heart, with the caption “Jesus, I trust in You.” Through these messages, Jesus implored a sinful world to turn back to Him now, in this time of mercy. He promises to forgive all our sins, no matter how grave, if only we go to Him in confession and receive the Eucharist on Divine Mercy Sunday.
These messages, recorded in St. Faustina’s diary, “Divine
Mercy in My Soul,” tell of the abundant mercy of Christ, but they also contain a
warning. Jesus asks Faustina to “…tell
souls about this great mercy of mine, because that awful day, the day of My
justice, is near” (Diary 965). Jesus doesn’t want us to wait, but to turn
to Him now.
Is there anything you have been fearful to confess? Don’t be
afraid, but trust in Jesus. Don’t neglect to ask His forgiveness in this
beautiful time of mercy.
