What is Truth?

Behold, he is coming amid the clouds,
and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him.
All the peoples of the earth will lament him.Yes. Amen.
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, " says the Lord God,
"the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty." Rev 1:7-8

The long-awaited Messiah, foretold by the prophets of old, has come to His people – and they did not know Him. Jesus, the Everlasting King, has been betrayed and handed over to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, to be put to death. Curiosity, or perhaps intuition, causes Pilate to hesitate, desiring to speak to Jesus, to ask, “Are you a King?” The reply Jesus gives is somewhat cryptic, “My kingdom does not belong to this world… for this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

What is truth? The answer to this question, which Pilate will next ask Jesus, has been already been revealed when Jesus told His disciples, “I AM the way, the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). All who belong to the truth will listen to His voice, because Jesus Himself is the Truth.

In these days of moral relativism, the very idea of objective truth is being denied by many in our culture. Whenever someone refers to “my” truth, or “your” truth, they reject “the” truth – and they reject Jesus. This radical redefinition of truth has so grown in popularity that it has nearly displaced the awareness of objective truth. Many believe that the truth must change to fit our beliefs, and that reality bends to fit our perceptions. The resulting confusion is evident in our society, particularly in the emerging gender ideology. If we can even deny that God created us male or female, what is left of the truth?

But in reality, our beliefs have no impact on the truth. Jesus is the Truth, no matter what we believe. He is King of heaven and earth, regardless of anyone’s opinion. And when Jesus returns, “amid the clouds… every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him. All the peoples of the earth will lament Him.” (Rev 1:7).

On that day, all will know Him; all will see the truth. But don’t wait for that day – listen to His voice and enter into His Kingdom now. Seek Him now and give Him your heart completely, because now is the time to show that you belong to Him. Now is the time to believe in the Truth.
