Invited to the Family of God

“The faith of all Christians rests on the Trinity.”
St. Caesarius of Arles

The Christian belief in the Trinity sets us apart and defines the way we understand our purpose and our destiny as children of God. We are invited to eternal union with our God, in the Eucharist, the Word, the Church, and in our hearts and souls, if only we accept the mystery and gift that is offered to us.

From the beginning, God loved mankind, taking “delight in the human race,” and invited us to enter into a beautiful and unique family relationship with Him. When the first man and woman turned away from His loving guidance, God the Father provided a way to heal that broken relationship by His plan to become man and redeem His beloved children. Through Jesus Christ, the Son, the way was opened for us to re-enter the family of God. Through the Holy Spirit, God’s presence enters our hearts and restores us to life. By His love, God creates us, redeems us, animates us, and guides us to all truth.

We may wonder with the psalmist, “What is man that you should be mindful of him, or the son of man that you should care for him? You have made him little less than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor.” God’s gracious love for us is unearned, His gift of redemption is undeserved, yet is freely given to all who turn to Him in trust. He not only offers us this priceless gift, but loves us enough to humbly stand at the door of our heart, knocking and waiting for us to allow Him in.

Sadly, many people reject God’s gift of salvation. But what of us, who are invited to become one with Him as members of His Body, to unite with Him eternally as His Bride, and are called to divine union with God in the Holy Catholic Church? Do we love Him enough to accept His invitation to enter into the family of God?

Don’t hesitate to throw open the doors of your heart to welcome this loving Father, this beloved Son and Redeemer, and the sweet refreshment of the Holy Spirit, offering Him all your love and gratitude in return for His gracious and merciful gift.
