Jesus, Healer of the Wounded Heart

“A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench…”Is 42:3

This beautiful passage from Isaiah describes our Lord as a gentle healer who holds us tenderly, guarding us with loving care. Jesus knows our hearts, sees every wound, and with gentle love calls us each by name, so that we may be made whole.

None of us have escaped pain in our lives, and many live each day with pain, suffering, anxiety, or sorrow. Jesus also suffered from pain and trauma in His human life. He was abandoned and betrayed: He was beaten, mocked, humiliated, stripped, and crucified. Our Lord knows what we are going through – we are not alone. Jesus suffers with us and for us.

Jesus longs to bring us healing, and one beautiful sign of His gentle and merciful love can be seen in the Divine Mercy image. In this picture, the scars on His hands and feet are visible, and from His wounded heart rays of pure white and red light, representing the blood and the water, flow out to the world, bringing healing and new life to all who trust in Him. The wounds in His hands, His feet, and His heart remain visible even in His glorified Divinity. His scars, like our own, provide strength. Only Jesus, fully Divine and fully human, can heal our deepest sorrows. As Venerable Bishop Fulton Sheen once wrote, "Scarred men come for healing only to scarred Hands! Only a Risen Jesus with scars can understand our hearts.”

Find a special place in your home to place a copy of the Divine Mercy image. Anytime you feel worried or afraid, meditate on the image and allow the pure streams of grace and mercy flow from His heart to yours. Let yourself enter into the safety and peace of His presence.

Ask Jesus to heal your broken heart, and help you to forgive those who have hurt you. Place all your trust in Him. Say to Him, “Jesus, I give you my wounded heart.” Tell Him about your pain and your desire to be healed. Ask Jesus for all the graces you need. He knows your sorrow, and He loves you more than you can imagine; let Him heal your wounded soul.
