Sharing the Light of Christ

“My little one, come, come, carry me into the holes of the poor—Come, be My light—I cannot go alone—They don't know Me—so they don’t want me… go amongst them—carry Me with you… how I long to enter… their dark, unhappy homes… in your love for Me, they will see Me, know Me, want Me…”

From Mother Teresa’s vision of Jesus, recounted in “Come, Be My Light.”

The prophet Isaiah foretold a time when a great light would come to the nations of Zebulun and Naphtali, to dispel the darkness and vanquish all distress. In the Gospel, Matthew proclaims that the promised Light has come as Jesus enters into that very region, calling the people to repent and proclaiming that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. From this small seaport, Jesus begins to gather His apostles, calling first Peter and Andrew, then James and John, from their boats on the Sea of Galilee, inviting these poor fishermen to become “fishers of men.”

Jesus now begins to reveal His mission and His Light to the whole world. He immediately passes on the power of His message to His disciples, allowing them to take part in His mission of salvation. They in turn pass on the mission to every person who responds to Jesus’s invitation: “Come, follow me.”

The mission Jesus gave to the Apostles has continued for over 2000 years, yet even now, there are still many people living in darkness, who do not know how much Jesus loves them. Every one of these souls is beloved by Jesus, and He asks us to help Him to reach them. He gives us both the mission and the grace to bring His light to them.

Is there someone in your life who is living in the darkness of unbelief, who suffers from the anguish of feeling unloved, who lives in the shadow of grief, unhappiness, or loneliness? In what way can you be a light in their life, to show them the love of Christ? We can each find some little way to carry the Light of Christ to those in the darkness. In your love for Christ, they will see Him, know Him, and draw closer to Him.

Come, be His Light!
