“This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Jn 11:4
As the coronavirus spreads worldwide, we find ourselves hidden in our homes, with many workplaces and businesses closed, venturing out only for needed supplies. There are no Masses or community gatherings for social support. This difficult situation is causing even those with no symptoms of illness to experience anxiety, loneliness, and fear. Those who are sick with the virus are faced with the knowledge that not all survive this scourge, while many people worldwide are grieving the loss of so many precious lives to this illness.
Today’s readings come at a time when they are most needed, as Jesus promises that all those who live and believe in Him will not die. Even though this life seems to come to an end, Jesus reassures us that life is eternal. He calls Lazarus forth from the dead, four days after his passing, so that all may see and believe in Him.
Jesus is calling us even now. To believe, repent, and prepare for eternity, because this life is fleeting, while the life He offers us is forever. Jesus tells us again and again, “Be not afraid!” Listen to Him. Prepare your hearts, your souls, your minds, for the day – however far off – when you will meet Him face to face. Now is the time of mercy. Now is the time to prepare. He is waiting, so that each one of us has the chance to turn back to Him and accept the gift He is offering to us.
In this unique time in modern history, while we are laid low by this plague, the Lord is calling your name, saying “Come out!” Come out of the darkness and into His wonderful light. What sins and sorrows are binding you? Are your eyes wrapped in a shroud, obscuring your vision? Are your hands bound in bandages, preventing you from reaching out to help your brothers and sisters? Ask Jesus to untie you and let you go. Healing is yours for the asking. The life Jesus gives is everlasting. Turn to Him now, with total repentance and trust. Even now, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is still available. Don’t miss this time of mercy.
