Waiting in Joyful Hope

“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him.” Jn 14:15

As we approach the end of the Easter season, still unable to attend Mass, it is especially important to unite in fervent prayer, asking God to pour out the miraculous gift of His Holy Spirit on His Church. Our church, our nation, and our world need the wisdom, light, and purifying fire of the Holy Spirit now more than ever, and our prayers make all the difference.

Always begin your prayer – and your day – by praying for the gift of the Holy Spirit. This week, the Church celebrates the Ascension of the Lord, followed by the Feast of Pentecost. Traditionally, the whole Church echoes the prayer of the Apostles during the nine days between those two celebrations with a Novena to the Holy Spirit.

There are many beautiful prayers to the Holy Spirit that you could pray each day during the Novena, including this traditional prayer:

Veni Creator Spiritus

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Or St. Augustine’s beautiful prayer to the Holy Spirit:

Breathe in me O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy, act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work too may be holy, draw my heart O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy, strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend all that is holy, guard me then O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen

Whatever prayer you choose, pray it with all your heart in union with the universal Church for the mercy, light, and love of the Holy Spirit to be poured out generously on us all during these difficult times. God hears every heartfelt prayer – and He is with you always. Trust in Him.
