The Sufferings of This Present Time

“Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.” Romans 8:18-23

In his letter to the Romans, St. Paul reminds his readers that this life is not the end; that God’s infinite glory and freedom awaits all the children of God who are suffering now. As the headlines bring us daily reports of violence, conflict, anger, and hatred, Christians need this reminder once again. The Word of God, which the Lord promises will accomplish what He has sent it to do, goes forth like the rain upon the earth, watering the ground and bringing forth good fruit. All the world’s corruption and pain can’t change that or stop it. God has already won the victory for us.

Our job as Christians has not changed over the centuries. We are called to proclaim the Gospel in season and out of season, speaking the truth with courage, love, and faith. We are promised the gift of the Holy Spirit: pray every morning for God to pour out His Holy Spirit upon you. We are adopted by the most loving and powerful Father, our God: open your heart each day to His will in your life, asking in prayer for His guidance. We are given the incredible gift of Jesus Christ’s life and death to sustain us: trust completely in Him and turn to Him in each moment, surrender your will to His, take up your cross and follow Him without fear. Open your eyes and see. Open your ears to hear. Open your heart to love.
