Keeping Vigil for 40 Days ~ Prayers for Life

Prayer for Mothers and Fathers

We pray today for all mothers who are afraid

to be mothers. We pray for those who feel threatened

and overwhelmed by their pregnancy.

May God give them the grace to say yes to life

and the courage to go on.  May they have the grace

to reject the false solution of abortion.

We pray for all fathers to have the courage and wisdom

to protect their children, their wives, their families,

from the devastating consequences of abortion.

May these men and women experience the help of

Christian people, and know the true

peace that comes from doing God’s will.

 Amen

Bishop Fulton Sheen's Prayer for Unborn Children

Dear Lord Jesus, I love you very much,

and I beg you to spare the lives of the unborn children,

(choose a name for a girl and a boy),

whom I have spiritually adopted,

who are in danger of abortion.

Amen

Mother Teresa's Letter to the US Supreme Court, 1994

In 1994, Mother Teresa of Calcutta wrote to the United States Supreme Court to express her stand against abortion. Her words, excerpted here, are a reminder of the great injustice of abortion and serve to call America back to the very first precept upon which this great nation was founded - the right to life for every human being.

"America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father's role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts -- a child -- as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience."

"It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters. And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign."

..."I have no new teaching for America. I seek only to recall you to faithfulness to what you once taught the world. Your nation was founded on the proposition—very old as a moral precept, but startling and innovative as a political insight—that human life is a gift of immeasurable worth, and that it deserves, always and everywhere, to be treated with the utmost dignity and respect."
